Guild Wars 2 Beginners Guide

If you just started playing Guild Wars 2 and you found yourself head over heels, not knowing what to do and where to go inside the game, then you’re on the right page.

I am going to show you and teach you the most important things you must know when first starting in GW2, as well as how to quickly advance in the game and gain experience.

The game follows the re-emergence of a disbanded guild called Destiny’s Edge, whose main goal is to fight the Elder Dragons who took control of their homeland, Tyria.

Tyria is the name of the world where all the action takes place, but it is also the name of the first continent, the place where you start the game.

To see the entire map you simply press the “M” key on your keyboard, which brings up the map. This is a quick way to travel between waypoints, which are points of interest. If you want to travel to a specific waypoint, you need to visit the map first.

Tyria is divided into continents and zones. These zones are part of Tyria (the world) just like Countries are part of the Earth.

To get a better idea about the world of Tyria, I recommend you watch the video below.

The Starting Area

The zone in which you start the game is known as “the starting area” and it is not the same for all players. It depends on the Race that you select when you first create your character.

This means that, if you choose the Human race, you will begin the game in the “Queensdale” area.

It doesn’t matter what profession you choose, whether you select the Warrior, the Engineer or any other profession, if you choose the Human race, the game will always start in the “Queensdale” area.

Creating Your Character

Before you play the game you need to create your character.

When you create your character, you first have the option to choose from five different races, each one with its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • Asura
  • Charr
  • Human
  • Norn
  • Sylvari

I am not going to go into details about each race here, but if you want to read more about them, you can visit the Guild Wars 2 Race overview page.

Next, you need to select a profession (this is just the new name for the Guild Wars 2 classes). The professions are the same for all races, and they are divided into  3 different types:

  • Soldiers
  • Adventurers
  • Scholars

They differentiate themselves one from another through the type of armor they can wear. The Soldiers wear heavy armor, the Adventurers wear medium armor while the Scholars wear light armor.

The Soldier professions are

  • Guardian
  • Warrior

Adventurer professions are:

  • Engineer
  • Ranger
  • Thief

Scholar Professions are

  • Elementalist
  • Mesmer
  • Necromancer

Again, I am not gonna go into detail for each profession here. If you like to learn more about each one, you can visit the Guild Wars 2 professions page.

Important Step When Creating your Character

When you are creating your character, at some point you will have to answer a series of questions where you will have multiple choices for choosing your answer.

Pay extra attention on how you answer these questions, as this will have a big influence in how you are going to play this game.

First of all, it will influence the biography and background of your character. The storyline for your character will also be influenced by the answers to these questions, along with the physical appearance of different zones of Tyria.

Beginner Tips and Strategies for Playing the Game

Just like in any other MMORPG, the main goal in GW2 is to level up your character by gaining as much experience as possible,  as fast as possible.

There are numerous ways in which you can gain XP, such as:

  • Slaying monsters;
  • Completing hearts
  • Discovering a new area
  • Participating in events
  • Crafting items
  • Making progress with your story
  • Inventing a new recipe
  • And much more.

The easiest way of gaining experience is by killing monsters. You should know though that monster killing doesn’t bring you a huge amount of experience. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing it, after all, it is often required to complete certain events and Hearts, but keep in mind that senseless grinding is of no help. So stay away from it.

What you should be focusing on are the Dynamic Events. They might seem to occur randomly, but the truth is there is a method behind them. They can be sought out.

So, if you want to gain a lot of experience fast, you need to participate in DEs, otherwise you will deprive yourself from huge amounts of experience.

I want to talk a bit more about the other ways of gaining experience, but I’ll stop here because I just have to tell you some advanced leveling strategies, so you can level up your character as fast as possible and shake off that “noob” aura.

I read the article, pretty good, but I’m still not sure what character to choose. Which one is the best? Any recommendations?

    • Ronnie says:

Hey Danny. Thanks for the question.

The thing is, there isn’t a character which is best. Everyone has its own advantages and disadvantages. I think it all boils down to how well you know how to play the strengths of each character so that you have a slight advantage over your enemy.

First thing I would recommend is think about what your game style is. Do you like to arm yourself with the heaviest armor and just go into battles swinging your ax left and right? Then probably the warrior is the best choice for you.

On the other hand, if you prefer staying in the background and just sue magic spells, then perhaps the necromancer is better suited for you.

Just assess your gaming style, and choose accordingly.

If you’re a beginner, one of the most important aspects of the game that you should familiarize yourself with is the map. It is your key to the world of Tyria and to everything that’s happening near your character. Hope this helps :)
